A Florida teacher in peril of losing her job and losing her home after a school lockdown is asking her fellow educators to help her out.
Carla Hernandez has been at the school for more than a year and says she has been the only teacher who is allowed to leave her classroom.
She says she’s trying to make sure her students don’t fall behind, and she’s worried the lockdown could cause her to lose her job.
But she’s also worried about the safety of her students and her own safety.
“I think that’s what really scares me the most.
You know, I think I’m a teacher that has to do everything I can to make my students safe.
And I think that I need to be a leader,” Hernandez said.
Hernandez says her students are really struggling to understand what is happening.
“And I’m worried that if you have a school-to-school lockdown that I’m not in, that I don’t know how to go about it, that if I’m in, I won’t be able to go to school,” Hernandez explained.
Hes parents are also concerned about her safety.
Her mother says Carla is working to make ends meet, and has been out of the house since October.
“She works two jobs, she works part-time and she works in the restaurant industry.
So I know that she’s struggling.
I just don’t understand how this could happen to her,” said Michelle Hernandez.
Her father says she is trying to be an example of the best that the country has to offer, but says the safety risks of the lockdown are real.
“We have a system in place to protect students and teachers, and I think we’re very fortunate that our school district has that system in effect.
We do it all the time, but we do it in a very responsible way, and it’s something that we can do and we can work to make that happen,” said Hernandez’s father.
Hazell’s case has drawn the attention of a number of other teachers in the area.
They say it’s a problem, but there’s also a need for safety.
Some teachers are concerned they’ll be put on the road to being replaced.
“There’s a lot of things that are happening in the country right now that are a little bit different, and there are teachers that are being fired right now because of this, so I think it’s very dangerous,” said Jessica Cusack with the Florida Teachers Association.
She says some schools have to close their doors because of the school lockdown, and many teachers don’t have any other options.
